Atypical/dysplastic nevi are moles that are found to have some atypical cells. These are not skin cancers, however, it is uncertain what proportion of these lesions will progress to develop into something more dangerous. In these cases, conservative excision with the placement of stitches is generally required and is done so under local anesthesia. Cysts, lipomas and other benign growths can become inflamed and irritated warranting their removal in a similar fashion or via less invasive modalities such as laser or hyfrecation. Moles can be removed for cosmetic purposes through a shave excision in which the mole is shaved off flush to the skin or they can be excised (cut out) completely involving the need for stitches.
