Skin Cancer Awareness Month: What You Need to Know to Protect Your Skin

May marks Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and at Skincare NYC, we’re dedicated to helping you understand the risks, recognize the signs, and take proactive steps toward skin health and cancer prevention.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, yet it’s also one of the most preventable and treatable when caught early. To stay protected and informed, let’s explore what you must know this May.

Why Skin Cancer Awareness Matters

More than 5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. While it often begins subtly—a mole, a freckle, a dry patch—skin cancer can become life-threatening if left untreated.

Common types include:

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) – Slow-growing but can be locally invasive.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) – Can spread if untreated.

Melanoma – The deadliest form of skin cancer, but highly curable when caught early.

Prevention Starts with Protection

Protecting your skin doesn’t require drastic changes—just smarter habits:

Use SPF 30 or higher daily – Even on cloudy days.

Avoid peak sun hours – Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Wear protective clothing – Hats, sunglasses, long sleeves.

Avoid tanning beds – UV radiation from tanning booths is a known carcinogen.

Know the ABCDEs of Melanoma

Early detection can save your life. Use the ABCDE rule to evaluate moles and spots:

Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other

Border: Irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges

Color: Multiple colors or uneven shading

Diameter: Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)

Evolving: Changing in size, shape, or color

If you notice anything unusual, don’t wait. Schedule a skin check with a board-certified dermatologist immediately.
