When diet and exercise have failed to reduce pockets of unwanted fat, liposuction may provide the results you desire. Liposuction, also called liposculpture, is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure designed to improve body shape by permanently removing fat from the torso, flanks, abdomen, back, outer and inner thighs, arms, neck, and chin. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss, but by removing fat and the hormones that fat emits, liposuction can help jumpstart your weight loss and a healthier lifestyle.
At NY Medical Skin Solutions you have access to the best, most skilled and aesthetically tuned cosmetic surgeons in Beverly Hills. The success and results of your procedure depend on the training, skills and experience of your cosmetic surgeon.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgery to remove excess fat from under the skin by suction. First, what is fat? Fat is tissue (otherwise known as adipose tissue) made up of cells that store energy and insulate the body. Fat is generally subcutaneous — located underneath the skin. Where fat is deposited around the body depends on a person’s gender, age and genetics. In men, fat tends to congregate in the chest, abdomen and buttocks. In women, it generally gathers in the breasts, hips, waist and buttocks.
There are two layers of subcutaneous fat: deep and superficial. During a liposuction procedure at our Beverly Hills office, the treatment area is first numbed with dilute anesthetic for your comfort. Your cosmetic surgeon makes a tiny incision and inserts a hollow, stainless-steel tube (called a cannula) into the deep fat layer. Working on this layer is safer than working on the superficial layer, because there is less risk of injuring the skin. In a typical procedure, the doctor pushes and pulls the tube through the fat layer, and as the cannula moves, it breaks up fat cells, and a vacuum pump or syringe removes the fat with suction.
The permanent removal of fat cells will reveal more refined proportions, and a more pleasing silhouette. Our cosmetic surgeons can sculpt your fat to new contours, improve symmetry and balance, and emphasize underlying muscles. Each patient receives liposuction tailored to their needs and aesthetic goals, and only safe volumes of fat are removed throughout the procedure.
Who is a good candidate for Liposuction?
In general, people with the following criteria are good candidates for Liposuction:
- Individuals with good skin tone and elasticity. People with loose skin are not good candidates as liposuction removes fat, but it doesn’t significantly tighten the skin.
- Adults over 18 years of age, who are in good health.
- Individuals within 25 pounds of their ideal weight.
- Individuals who have fatty deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise.
Most importantly the right patient has realistic expectations. During the procedure, your cosmetic surgeon will remove just enough fat, in all the right areas to give you a new, healthy body shape and proportions.
People with circulation problems, any chronic health condition or medication that can interfere with healing are not suitable candidates. Pregnant and nursing women are not good candidates, and those with allergies to lidocaine anesthetic should not undergo the procedure.
Your Liposuction consultation
During a consultation with your cosmetic surgeon, you’ll discuss your concerns and aesthetic goals. Your cosmetic surgeon will ultimately determine how much fat can be removed safely based on the area(s) to be treated, your overall weight, and body shape.
Take this opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the procedure, and understand the risks and benefits. You’ll also discuss your medical history, and undergo a more complete medical exam for your safety.
The Liposuction procedure
Liposuction surgery is an outpatient procedure. For your safely, we use tumescent anesthesia to numb the areas to be treated. You will be awake during the procedure to avoid the risks associated with general anesthesia. We may give you medication to maximize your comfort.
Tumescent anesthesia is a mixture of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine that is slowly injected into the treatment area. When the area is numbed, a straw-like tube called a cannula is used to draw fat out of the target area. Tiny incisions are strategically placed to be as inconspicuous as possible.
Recovering from Liposuction
After your liposuction procedure, you will return to the comfort of your home wearing compression garments. Bruising and swelling may occur initially and these begin to fade after approximately one week. Most patients are able to return to work in 5-7 days. Although you will notice an immediate difference in your contour, your final results are seen in about 6 months after all swelling has disappeared. During your liposuction consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will review pre-operative and post-operative requirements and expectations. For trimmer contours and a more youthful appearance, liposuction can restore confidence in your image. Liposuction is one of the most popular treatments in aesthetic medicine, and we look forward to helping you achieve your aesthetic goals.
