Sclerotherapy is a safe method for reducing uncomplicated spider veins and slightly larger bluish-green veins on the legs. It is not meant to treat painful, large varicose veins. During your consultation, your provider will assess your veins and determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. During each treatment session, your problematic veins are identified and a sclerosing agent called Asclera is injected into one or more vessels. Asclera damages blood vessel walls, and this causes platelets to attach. These platelets form a clot; the surrounding vessel shrinks down; and it is eventually absorbed by your body. Because we have many redundant veins in the skin, eliminating a few does not have negative health consequences. Following your procedure, we recommend that you wear compression stockings, which help squeeze down vessels further. Although some vessels may disappear immediately, other may continue to shrink down and disappear over the next several weeks. Often, more than one session is recommended for best results.
